They build developments nationwide, from Aberdeen to Plymouth, helping to meet housing demand in towns, cities and rural areas. We provide high quality, value for money homes for all market sectors, plus homes for rent and shared ownership, and are leaders in brownfield development and urban regeneration.

They operate two strong national brands for house building – Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes. In London we operate as Barratt London and in Kent and the South East we also have a strong regional brand – Ward Homes.

History of Barratt Developments

1958: Sir Lawrie Barratt establishes the company. Sir Lawrie Barratt builds Britain's very first Barratt home on the outskirts of Newcastle-upon-Tyne.  The four-bedroom detached house cost £1,750 and led to the formation of the first Barratt Company.

1972 onwards: A programme of rapid expansion is launched through a series of acquisitions and the creation of new companies.  The first moves were into Yorkshire, the North West and Scotland, followed by expansion into the Midlands and South.

1982: Sales surpass £300 million and the company builds over 1,000 units more than its closest competitor. Barratt becomes the only consistently active developer in the redevelopment of London Docklands.

1983: Barratt's project to regenerate the Toxteth estate in Liverpool becomes the first project of its kind in the UK.

1991: The Company reports losses during an industry downturn; Sir Lawrie Barratt comes out of retirement to take over as chairman.
